Great Curassow

Crax rubra

The Great Curassow (Crax rubra) is a large, pheasant-like bird found in the tropical forests of Central and South America. It is known for its striking appearance, with glossy black plumage, a distinctive crest, and bright yellow knob-like casque on its bill. These birds are primarily frugivorous, feeding on a variety of fruits, but they also consume insects and small vertebrates. Great Curassows are generally shy and elusive, preferring to dwell in dense, humid forests. They are often heard before they are seen, as they produce a variety of vocalizations including deep, booming calls. Unfortunately, habitat loss and hunting pose significant threats to their populations.
