Calakmul Birding Expedition
A full birding day in Calakmul combining the forest road, archaeological site and optional bat volcano evening spectacle.
About this tour
Spend a long field day in the extensive tropical forest around Calakmul. Birding begins before sunrise and continues along the reserve’s access road, where the quieter early hours offer the best chance to encounter forest birds moving between the road edge and canopy.
Ocellated Turkey is a principal target, alongside Yucatan Jay, Yucatan Woodpecker, Yucatan Flycatcher, Yellow-lored Parrot, Collared Forest-Falcon, Keel-billed Toucan and Gartered Trogon. Great Curassow and Ornate Hawk-Eagle are further possibilities in this biodiverse landscape, but no sighting is assured.
The archaeological zone can be included as part of the forest exploration. On the return route, an optional late-day stop at the bat cave may add the spectacle of a large evening emergence and the possibility of raptors hunting nearby. Long transfers, current access and the optional evening extension are confirmed before departure.

Day 1
Pre-sunrise departure toward Calakmul
Leave the hotel before sunrise and begin birding from the ticket area and forest access road.
Day 2
Calakmul forest road and archaeological site
Search for Ocellated Turkey, parrots, woodpeckers, trogons and other forest birds while visiting the archaeological zone.
Day 3
Optional bat volcano
On the return drive, add the evening bat cave spectacle where raptors may hunt emerging bats.
