The Yucatan Woodpecker (Melanerpes pygmaeus) is a small woodpecker found in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico and northern Belize. It has a distinctive black and white barred pattern on its back and wings, with a red crown and nape. This species is known for its drumming behavior, creating loud and rapid pecking sounds on trees to communicate and establish territory. Yucatan Woodpeckers primarily inhabit dry forests, scrublands, and wooded areas with cacti, where they forage for insects and larvae. They are cavity nesters, excavating holes in dead trees for nesting. The conservation status of the Yucatan Woodpecker is currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN.
