Uxmal and Puuc Route Birding Day
A birding day around Uxmal and the Puuc Route for Yucatan endemics, low forest birds and optional archaeology.
About this tour
Reach the Uxmal area around sunrise and begin along quiet roads beside the archaeological zone. Humid low forest, grassland edges and small wetland patches provide habitat for Yucatan Jay, Yucatan Woodpecker, Gray-throated Chat, Yucatan Flycatcher, Yellow-lored Parrot, White-bellied Wren and other regional specialties.
The birding pace is suitable for both observers and photographers, with short walks made near the vehicle. Motmots, forest-edge tanagers, woodpeckers and occasional raptors may be found around the surrounding vegetation. Time can be shifted between locations according to bird activity and the guest’s priorities.
A visit to the Uxmal archaeological site is optional. Guests who enter can combine Maya history and Puuc architecture with easier birding around the open structures, while those prioritizing birds can remain in nearby gardens and habitat edges. If the day allows, a Mérida park can add wetland and urban-edge species on the return journey.
