Gartered Trogon

Trogon caligatus Gould, 1838

Gartered Trogon, Trogon caligatus, is a bird of Middle America and north-western South America, from eastern Mexico through Central America to Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. It belongs to the trogon family and was described by Gould in 1838. In treatments that recognise it as a separate species, it is divided into three subspecies. It is mainly associated with semi-open country, including forest edges, clearings, secondary growth, gallery forest and shaded coffee and cacao plantations, and in Mexico it also occurs in denser evergreen forest and rainforest.
