Great Green Macaw

Ara ambiguus (Bechstein, 1811)

Great Green Macaw, Ara ambiguus, is a parrot of Middle and South America, breeding from eastern Honduras to western Ecuador. It belongs to the family Psittacidae and was described by Bechstein in 1811. The nominate form ranges from Honduras to Colombia, while another subspecies is confined to surviving dry forest on Ecuador’s southern Pacific coast. The nominate bird lives in the upper layers of wet tropical forest, and in Costa Rica it is usually linked with the almendro tree, Dipteryx oleifera.
