Great Jacamar, Jacamerops aureus, is a bird of Middle America and South America, breeding from Costa Rica to north-west Ecuador and through Amazonia. It belongs to the family Galbulidae in the order Piciformes. This is the largest jacamar and is much more heavily built than the others in its family. It lives in tropical forest, especially along stream banks, in the middle layers of the canopy and at shaded forest edges. It was described by Philipp Ludwig Statius Müller in 1776.
