Great Jacamar

Jacamerops aureus

The Great Jacamar (Jacamerops aureus) is a striking bird found in the tropical forests of South America. With its vibrant green and golden plumage, it is a sight to behold as it perches on branches and hunts for insects. This species is known for its distinctive call, a series of loud, sharp notes that echo through the forest. Great Jacamars are cavity nesters, often utilizing old woodpecker holes for breeding. They are skilled hunters, catching insects in mid-air with their long, sharp bills. Unfortunately, habitat loss due to deforestation poses a significant threat to their populations.
