The Great Slaty Woodpecker (Mulleripicus pulverulentus) is the largest woodpecker species, measuring around 45-48 cm in length. It has a distinctive slate-grey plumage with a prominent red crest on the male. This woodpecker is known for its loud, high-pitched calls and can be found in mature, undisturbed forests. It forages on tree trunks and large branches for insects and grubs, using its powerful bill to excavate cavities for nesting. The Great Slaty Woodpecker is a social species often found in pairs or small groups. Due to habitat loss and degradation, its population is declining, and it is classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN.
