Greater Amakihi

Viridonia sagittirostris Rothschild, 1892

Fringillidae — Finches, Euphonias

Greater Amakihi, Viridonia sagittirostris, was an extinct finch from Hawaii in the Hawaiian Islands, first described by Rothschild in 1892. It was confined to the Island of Hawaii and was last recorded in 1901. The bird was the largest known amakihi of recent times and could be told from its close relative by its white bill and greater length. It lived in a small forest area, moving through vines and trees, and was found in a limited tract that was later cleared for sugarcane.
