Greater Yellowlegs

Tringa melanoleuca

The Greater Yellowlegs is a large shorebird with a distinctive long, bright yellow legs and a slightly upturned bill. It has a mottled brown and white plumage on its back and wings, and a white belly. During the breeding season, it can be found in the boreal forests of North America, where it nests on the ground near wetlands. Outside of the breeding season, it migrates to coastal areas, mudflats, and marshes in the southern United States, Central America, and northern South America. It forages for small invertebrates in shallow water, using its long bill to probe the mud for prey. This species is known for its distinctive, piercing call that it uses to communicate with other individuals.
