Hooded Crane

Hooded Crane, Grus monacha, is a crane of the Palearctic, breeding in south-eastern Siberia and northern China. It is also a regular migrant in Japan, with most birds wintering there, and further wintering sites in South Korea and China. Among cranes it is one of the smaller kinds, yet it remains a substantial bird. Its body is grey, while the head and upper neck are white apart from a bare red patch above the eye. It was described by Temminck in 1835 and belongs to the family Gruidae.
