Iiwi

Drepanis coccinea

The Iiwi is a small bird endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. It has a distinctive curved bill used for foraging for insects and nectar in native forest, and is known for vibrant red plumage and important pollination behavior. Habitat loss, mosquito-borne avian disease and introduced species have contributed to population decline, so conservation work focuses on protecting remaining native forest habitat.

Habitat: Native Hawaiian forest, especially Ohia and other nectar-rich forest canopy habitat.
