Indigo Bunting

Passerina cyanea (Linnaeus, 1766)

Indigo Bunting, Passerina cyanea, is a bird of North America, breeding from south-central, south-eastern Canada to south-western, south-central and south-eastern USA, and spending the non-breeding season in Mexico, Central America and northern South America. It belongs to the cardinal family, Cardinalidae, and is found in farmland, brushy places and open woodland. It is closely related to the Lazuli Bunting, and the two interbreed where their ranges meet. The species was described by Linnaeus in 1766.
