About this tour

Follow spring migration through the Coastal Bend and barrier islands of South Texas with Jeff and Angie Birmingham. This multi-day field experience welcomes birders, photographers and nature travelers, including those new to bird photography. At most six participants travel together, allowing the guides to adjust stops for current bird activity, light, wind and tides. Local transportation is included once you arrive in Port Aransas.

Woodlots and oak motts provide places to look for migrating songbirds, while ponds, wetlands, beaches and tidal flats bring different photographic subjects. Painted Bunting and Indigo Bunting are among the birds illustrated for the program. Warblers, orioles, tanagers, grosbeaks and flycatchers add songbird interest; shorebirds, waders and raptors broaden the possibilities. Migration changes from day to day, so the selection of sites and any particular sighting depend on conditions.

Field days generally begin early to use morning bird activity and softer light. Midday allows time for meals, rest, downloading images and informal discussions of camera settings or field technique. Afternoon and evening sessions can return to coastal birds, with changing light and sunset offering further opportunities. Routes remain flexible rather than following a fixed named-site checklist.

Jeff and Angie provide practical help with autofocus, camera setup, exposure, composition and reading behavior. The amount of instruction can match your experience and interests; birders are welcome without pressure to become photographers. Canon cameras and lenses are available to borrow when needed. Short walks and accessible birding locations form part of the experience, and individual walking needs should be discussed when arranging your visit.

The advertised program price is USD 1,295, including guided birding and photography, local transport, scouting, daily planning and pre-trip preparation information. Lodging, meals, personal expenses and travel to Port Aransas are separate. Corpus Christi International Airport is described as about 45 minutes away, with San Antonio roughly three hours and Houston around five hours by road.
