Javan Frogmouth

Batrachostomus javensis

The Javan Frogmouth is a nocturnal bird native to the forests of Java, Indonesia. It belongs to the family Podargidae and is known for its distinctive appearance, with a large head and wide, hooked bill. This species has a mottled brown and grey plumage that provides excellent camouflage against tree bark. Javan Frogmouths are skilled hunters, feeding primarily on insects and small vertebrates. They are known for their unique call, a series of deep, resonant hoots. Due to habitat loss and fragmentation, the conservation status of the Javan Frogmouth is currently listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
