Lesser Horned Owl

Bubo magellanicus (Lesson, RP, 1828)

Strigidae — Owls

Lesser Horned Owl, Bubo magellanicus, is an owl of southern South America, breeding from central Peru to Tierra del Fuego. It was described by Lesson in 1828 and belongs to the family Strigidae. It is treated as a separate species from the Great Horned Owl because of differences in voice and size, together with genetic distance. It has broad wings, a large head with two ear tufts, and a mainly grey-brown plumage that varies. The underparts are pale with narrow bars, the breast is blotched, and the facial disc is edged in black with white stripes above the yellow eyes.
