About this tour

This eight-day birding journey connects the Sacred Valley with cloud forest, high Andean woodland and wetlands, using Birds Hotel Molino near Ollantaytambo as a comfortable base for much of the trip. The route ranges from approximately 1,650 to 4,200 meters above sea level and combines time at hummingbird feeders with excursions to contrasting habitats.

The first two days introduce the Sacred Valley through the lodge gardens and other hummingbird gardens. There is time for photography and acclimatization before the route descends to Inkatambo and Tunkiwasi. Forest trails occupy much of the third day, followed by an overnight at Tunkiwasi and further morning birding toward Ipal Lodge before returning to the valley.

Abra Málaga brings a different birding setting: Polylepis woodland, montane scrub and open highland ground, with opportunities to search for specialized hummingbirds, finches, antpittas and tapaculos. Another excursion follows the Patacancha valley, followed by an afternoon around the lodge feeders. Lake Huaypo, Chacán and surrounding wetlands, fields and woodland patches form the focus of the seventh day, including a picnic lunch outdoors.

The final morning is spent in the lodge gardens before traveling toward Cusco. Depending on the flight schedule, a walk through the city may be possible before the flight back to Lima. The journey starts with arrival in Cusco and describes a return toward Lima; flights are not included. Pickup from Cusco or Ollantaytambo can be arranged upon request.

The operator describes potential for about 120 or more species and at least 14 endemic species, rather than guaranteed totals. The tour is offered throughout the year, although some birds may not be observable in particular months. Guests with specific birding priorities can discuss seasonal suitability before arranging their dates.
