Bearded Mountaineer

Oreonympha nobilis Gould, 1869

Bearded Mountaineer, Oreonympha nobilis, is a hummingbird of south-central Peru in the Apurímac and Cuzco departments, with a second Peruvian population in Huancavelica, Ayacucho and Apurímac. It was described by Gould in 1869 and is the only member of its genus. The bird lives in dry Andean valleys, on rocky slopes, scrubby hillsides and open woodland, and it also turns up in tree tobacco and Eucalyptus, including beside roads and in towns. It is found from 2,500 to 3,900 m and remains in the same area year-round.
