Andean Goose

Chloephaga melanoptera (Eyton, 1838)

Andean Goose, Chloephaga melanoptera, is a member of the Anatidae family in the order Anseriformes. It breeds in South America from Peru south to southern Chile and Argentina. The species occurs in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Peru, and is a year-round resident apart from temporary shifts in height. It lives in open grassland, boggy ground, and along lake and lagoon edges, usually above 3,000 m. It is almost wholly on land, though it uses water to help chicks avoid predators.
