Private Full-Day Atacama Birding with Valeria Heindl
Explore oasis birds at Jere Canyon, flamingos at Chaxa Lagoon and Altiplano wetland specialties on a private 12-hour birding day from San Pedro de Atacama.
About this tour
Spend a full day moving between the contrasting bird habitats around San Pedro de Atacama with naturalist and conservationist Valeria Heindl. This private outing links a desert oasis, the Atacama Salt Flat and northern highland wetlands, giving birders a broader view of the region than a single-site visit. The format suits both newer birdwatchers and visitors working toward particular species.
The route starts to the south at Jere Canyon, also known as Quebrada de Jere. Cooler morning conditions are used to look for active oasis birds, including Tamarugo Conebill, Chiguanco Thrush, Plain-mantled Tit-Spinetail and cinclodes. Later in the morning, Chaxa Lagoon shifts the focus to waterbirds. Three flamingo species may occur here alongside Puna Plover and Andean Avocet, with time to observe birds in the salt-flat setting.
After lunch at a local restaurant, visit Catarpe Valley to look for Greyish Miner. Continue through Guatin cactus canyon before Machuca, watching for Ash-breasted Sierra Finch and Greenish Yellow Finch among the towering Echinopsis atacamensis cacti. The journey then continues toward the Altiplano. Machuca, Putana and Jauna form the highland part of the circuit, where wetland searches include Diademed Sandpiper-Plover. Vicunas and vizcachas add to the wildlife interest; Andean Cat and Culpeo are possible encounters rather than assured sightings. The day keeps a relaxed pace for observation and photography.
Valeria estimates that roughly 40-50 bird species may be seen across the full route, depending on the season. That is an indication of the habitat variety, not a fixed species total or a sighting guarantee. Private groups contain two or three participants, keeping the vehicle comfortable and allowing attention to individual interests.
The 12-hour outing costs USD 425 per person. Private 4x4 transport, specialist guidance in English and Spanish, park entries, meals and snacks, mineral water, field guides, binoculars for each participant and a Vortex spotting scope are included. Valeria also arranges custom birding routes for travelers with particular interests; these can be discussed through an inquiry.
