Rhinocryptidae — Tapaculos

Vilcabamba Tapaculo, Scytalopus urubambae, is a passerine of the Rhinocryptidae family found in eastern Peru, where it is confined to the upper Urubamba Valley in Cuzco Department. It was first named by Zimmer in 1939. The bird lives in humid montane and elfin forest, especially where moss and boulders are common, at 3,500 to 4,200 m. It is a wren-like tapaculo with a slender bill, fairly long legs and a short tail carried upright. The species was later raised from subspecies status after vocal differences were recognised.
