Little Grey Woodpecker, Dendropicos elachus, is a woodpecker of the Sahel, breeding in southern Mauritania and northern Senegal, and from Mali east to western Sudan. It was described by Oberholser in 1919. The bird is a very small member of the family, with a relatively long, broad bill. Males show a red hind crown and nape, while females do not. The upperparts are grey-brown with white barring, and the rump and upper tail coverts are red, most obvious in flight. It uses steppe with scattered trees, wadis and dry stream beds.
