Masked Trogon

Trogon personatus Gould, 1842

Masked Trogon, Trogon personatus, is a bird of humid highland forests in South America, from Colombia to Peru and southern Venezuela. It belongs to the trogons and was described by Gould in 1842. It is found mainly in the Andes and tepui regions, and it is resident across a wider stretch of the continent. The species is marked by sexual dimorphism, with males showing glossy green, reddish-bronze or golden-green upperparts depending on subspecies, and females brown above with a pinkish to red underside. It nests in a cavity cut into soft wood in a rotting upright trunk.
