Mourning Warbler

Geothlypis velata

The Mourning Warbler is a small, elusive songbird found in the dense understory of deciduous and mixed forests in North America. It is known for its distinctive black mask and olive-green upperparts. This species is primarily insectivorous, foraging for insects and spiders in the leaf litter and low vegetation. The male's song is a series of musical phrases that can be heard during the breeding season. Despite its widespread distribution, the Mourning Warbler can be difficult to observe due to its secretive nature and preference for dense vegetation.
