Northern Rough-winged Swallow

Stelgidopteryx serripennis

The Northern Rough-winged Swallow is a small, migratory bird found in North and South America. It is named for the tiny serrations on the leading edge of its wing feathers. This species is often found near water, where it catches insects on the wing. Its plumage is primarily brown and gray, with a slightly forked tail. Northern Rough-winged Swallows build their nests in crevices, often using abandoned woodpecker holes. They are known for their distinctive call, a soft twittering. While not currently threatened, habitat loss and degradation of nesting sites are potential future concerns for this species.
