Dendropicos griseocephalus (Boddaert, 1783)

Picidae — Woodpeckers

Olive Woodpecker, Dendropicos griseocephalus, is a woodpecker of southern and south-central Africa. It belongs to the Picidae family and is found in wooded and forested country across its breeding range. A notable feature is its bright red rump, set against bronze upperparts. Three subspecies are recognised, including forms from southeast Africa, with the red-bellied race showing a stronger belly patch and the montane race being the smallest. It lives in dense tree cover from 450 to 3,700 m, and is often seen feeding in mossy trees.
