Private Cape Mountains and Fynbos Birding Day Tour with Birding Ecotours

Cape Rockjumper

About this tour

Leave Cape Town for a private day of birding along the dramatic meeting point of the Cape Fold Mountains and the Atlantic coast. The route is designed around the region's fynbos specialists, with Cape Rockjumper, Cape Sugarbird, Orange-breasted Sunbird, Cape Siskin and Victorin's Warbler among the principal possibilities.

The first main field session is around Rooi Els, where rocky slopes and low coastal vegetation support rockjumpers, siskins, sunbirds, Ground Woodpecker and Cape Rock Thrush. The mountain airspace can produce Rock Kestrel and Jackal Buzzard, while Peregrine Falcon and Verreaux's Eagle are further raptor possibilities. Winter and spring can also bring Southern Right Whales close to shore, although marine mammals are an incidental part of the day.

At Betty's Bay the emphasis shifts to the African Penguin colony and the rocky shoreline, where African Oystercatcher and several cormorants can occur. Nearby Harold Porter National Botanical Garden adds sheltered fynbos and forest-edge habitat, with further opportunities for Victorin's Warbler, Cape Batis, canaries, waxbills and seasonal African Paradise Flycatcher.

If time and current conditions allow, the return journey includes productive wetlands for flamingos, ducks, grebes, pelicans, marsh harriers and reedbed birds. Striped Flufftail is a highly seasonal and elusive possibility from roughly mid-July to early September and can never be guaranteed. The exact sequence remains flexible so the guide can respond to weather, access and bird activity.
