African penguin

Spheniscus demersus

The African penguin, also known as the jackass penguin due to its donkey-like braying call, is a species of penguin found along the coast of southern Africa. These penguins have distinctive black and white plumage with a black stripe and spots on their chest. They are well adapted for marine life, using their flipper-like wings to propel themselves through the water in search of fish and squid. African penguins nest in colonies on offshore islands and rocky shores, where they excavate burrows or find shelter among rocks. Unfortunately, they are classified as Endangered by the IUCN due to threats such as overfishing, habitat destruction, and oil pollution.
