Picidae — Woodpeckers
Pale-billed Woodpecker, Campephilus guatemalensis, is a woodpecker of Middle America, with a breeding range that is widespread there. It was described by Hartlaub in 1844. It occurs from Mexico south to western Panama, and is resident all year across its range. It uses forest interiors and edges, especially lowland tropical evergreen forest, and also appears in other wooded habitats, including mangroves and some montane forests. It avoids broad areas that have been cleared. Three subspecies are recognised: regius, nelsoni and guatemalensis.
