Pied Oystercatcher

Haematopus leucopodus

The Pied Oystercatcher (Haematopus leucopodus) is a striking shorebird found along the coastlines of Australia. It is easily recognized by its black and white plumage, long orange-red bill, and bright red eye. These birds are often seen foraging for mollusks and crustaceans along sandy beaches and rocky shores. They are known for their loud, piping calls and are often found in pairs or small groups. The Pied Oystercatcher is a vigilant and territorial bird, often defending its nesting sites from intruders. Despite being widespread, they face threats from habitat loss and human disturbance.
