Pied Oystercatcher, Haematopus longirostris, is an oystercatcher of coastal Australasia, breeding along the shores of Australia and Tasmania, and also in the far eastern Lesser Sundas, Tanimbar and Kai Islands in the Moluccas. It is a wading bird of beaches and other coastal margins. It is identified by its orange-red bill, black and white plumage, and slender pink legs. The sexes look much the same, though males usually have a bill that is shorter and broader. It was described by Vieillot in 1817.
