Pied Wheatear

Oenanthe pleschanka

The Pied Wheatear, scientifically known as Oenanthe pleschanka, is a small passerine bird found in open, arid habitats across Europe and Asia. This species is characterized by its striking black and white plumage, with a black head, back, and wings, and a white belly and rump. The male Pied Wheatear displays a distinctive black mask around its eyes. These birds are known for their agile and acrobatic flight, often seen perching on prominent rocks or fences. They primarily feed on insects and small invertebrates. The Pied Wheatear is a migratory species, spending the breeding season in open grasslands and rocky areas, and wintering in sub-Saharan Africa. Although their populations are currently stable, they may face threats from habitat loss and climate change.
