About this tour

This full-day journey from Baku combines the open steppe and wetland habitats of Shirvan National Park with the rocky terrain and cultural landscape of Gobustan. Shirvan lies about 120 kilometers south of the city along the Baku-Astara road. Its mix of semi-desert, lake and reedbed habitat supports a wide range of birds as well as Goitered Gazelle.

The birding emphasis changes with the season. In spring, the open country may hold Black Francolin and European Roller, while wet areas add possibilities such as Grey-headed Swamphen, Ferruginous Duck and White-tailed Lapwing. Menetries’s Warbler and Blue-cheeked Bee-eater are further seasonal targets. In winter, the park can hold large gatherings of Little Bustards and waterfowl such as Marbled Teal and White-headed Duck. Wild sightings depend on current conditions and cannot be guaranteed.

After exploring Shirvan, the route continues to Gobustan State Historical and Cultural Reserve. Birding among the rocky outcrops may produce Western Rock Nuthatch, Chukar, Finsch’s Wheatear, Rock Sparrow and Red-billed Chough, while Lanner Falcon is a seasonal possibility. The visit also includes the Gobustan Museum and petroglyph area before continuing to the Gilinj mud volcanoes and nearby natural-history exhibits. The tour returns to Baku in the evening.
