Prong-billed Barbet

The Prong-billed Barbet is a medium-sized bird found in the cloud forests of Costa Rica and Panama. It is known for its distinctive appearance, with a stout, slightly curved bill and vibrant plumage. These barbets are primarily frugivorous, feeding on a variety of fruits and occasionally insects. They are often observed in small groups or pairs, emitting a series of loud, repetitive calls. The species plays a vital role in seed dispersal within its habitat and is considered an important indicator of forest health. Despite facing habitat loss and fragmentation, conservation efforts are underway to protect its remaining forested areas.
