Prong-billed Barbet

Semnornis frantzii (Sclater, PL, 1864)

Prong-billed Barbet, Semnornis frantzii, is a bird of humid mountain forest in Costa Rica and western Panama. It belongs to the toucan barbet family, Semnornithidae, and breeds in Middle America. Its name comes from the notched bill tip, which is silvery grey to bluish with a dark end, while the upper mandible is hooked and also notched. The species is the only one in its genus. It lives in very wet evergreen montane forest, both within the interior and along the margins, where mosses, epiphytes and frequent fog are part of the habitat.
