Purple Martin

Progne subis

The Purple Martin is a medium-sized swallow with a glossy blue-black plumage and a slightly forked tail. These birds are known for their acrobatic flight and cheerful chirping. They are highly social and often nest in large colonies, typically in human-made birdhouses. Purple Martins are insectivores, feeding on flying insects caught in mid-air. They are commonly found in open areas near water, such as marshes, lakes, and rivers. During the breeding season, they can be seen performing aerial displays to attract mates. Despite facing threats from habitat loss and competition for nesting sites, conservation efforts have helped stabilize their populations in many areas.
