Pygmy Falcon
Polihierax semitorquatus
The Pygmy Falcon (Polihierax semitorquatus) is a small raptor found in eastern and southern Africa. It is the smallest raptor on the continent, measuring around 19-20 cm in length. This bird is known for its distinctive appearance, with a grey head, back, and wings, and a reddish-orange belly. It has a black 'mask' around its eyes and a white throat. Pygmy falcons are often found in savannas and open woodlands, where they nest in abandoned tree cavities or old weaver bird nests. They are highly social birds, often seen in pairs or small family groups. Their diet mainly consists of insects, small reptiles, and occasionally small birds.
