Red-breasted Chat, Granatellus venustus, is a passerine of the Cardinalidae family that breeds in Middle America, confined to Mexico. It was described by Bonaparte in 1850. The species is endemic to western Mexico, with its main range running from Sinaloa south to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, extending inland to Morelos along the Balsas River and into Chiapas. One subspecies is limited to the Islas Marías off Nayarit. It lives in thorn forest, scrubby woodland, secondary growth and other dense cover, and has also been reported from swamp forest and river edges.
