Sitta canadensis
The Red-breasted Nuthatch is a small songbird found in coniferous forests of North America. It is characterized by its blue-gray upperparts, rusty-orange breast, and black eyestripe. This agile bird is known for its distinctive nasal call and its habit of creeping headfirst down tree trunks. It forages for insects and seeds in pine, spruce, and fir trees, using its strong bill to extract food from crevices. During the breeding season, the male performs a courtship display by bringing food to the female. The Red-breasted Nuthatch is a year-round resident in its range and can be observed visiting bird feeders in winter.
