Poikilocarbo gaimardi
The Red-faced Cormorant is a striking seabird with a distinctive red face and throat. It is a medium-sized cormorant, measuring around 60-70 cm in length. This species is known for its specialized feeding behavior, diving underwater to catch fish and crustaceans. Red-faced Cormorants breed in colonies on coastal cliffs and islands in the North Pacific, primarily in Alaska and eastern Siberia. They are well adapted to the marine environment and are often seen foraging in nearshore waters. Due to their limited breeding range and vulnerability to oil spills and human disturbance, the Red-faced Cormorant is considered Near Threatened by the IUCN.
