Cryptospiza reichenovii (Hartlaub, 1874)

Red-faced Crimsonwing, Cryptospiza reichenovii, is a bird of Africa’s western, central and south-eastern regions, where it lives in mountainous areas from Bioko and the Western High Plateau to the Albertine Rift montane forests and east Africa. It was first described in 1874. It belongs to the Estrildidae family. The species is placed in the genus Cryptospiza, one of four in that group. Three subspecies are recognised: reichenovii in southeast Nigeria, Cameroon, northwest Angola and Bioko; ocularis in east DR Congo, southwest Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi; and australis from Tanzania to Malawi, east Zimbabwe and west Mozambique.
