Vanellus indicus (Boddaert, 1783)

Red-wattled Lapwing, Vanellus indicus, is a plover of the Oriental Region, breeding from Turkey, Iraq and the north-eastern Arabian Peninsula through southern Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and north-west India to Sri Lanka, and east to south-west China, the Malay Peninsula and northern and southern Vietnam. It belongs to the family Charadriidae and was described by Boddaert in 1783. This ground-dwelling bird does not perch. It is known for its loud alarm calls, which have given rise to the nickname did-he-do-it bird. It is often found in pairs or small groups near water.
