Ring-necked Duck

Aythya collaris

The Ring-necked Duck is a medium-sized diving duck found in North America. Males have striking black plumage with a distinctive white ring around the bill and a purplish sheen on the head, while females have a brownish body and a smaller, less conspicuous ring around the bill. They are often found in freshwater lakes, ponds, and marshes, where they dive to feed on aquatic plants, seeds, and small invertebrates. During the breeding season, they can be found in boreal forests and wetlands. Ring-necked Ducks are known for their distinctive vocalizations and are often seen in mixed flocks with other diving ducks.
