Ringed Woodpecker

Celeus torquatus

The Ringed Woodpecker (Celeus torquatus) is a medium-sized woodpecker found in South America. It has a distinctive black and white plumage with a red crown and throat patch in males. This species is known for its drumming behavior, using its bill to create loud, rapid beats on trees to establish territory and attract mates. Ringed Woodpeckers primarily inhabit tropical and subtropical forests, foraging for insects and larvae in tree bark. They are often observed climbing tree trunks and branches in search of food. While not currently considered threatened, habitat loss and deforestation are potential threats to their populations.
