Rufous Owl, Ninox rufa, is an owl of the Strigidae family found in Australasia, with breeding areas in New Guinea and its satellites, and northern Australia. Described by Gould in 1846, it is also known as the rufous boobook. Its name comes from the rufous plumage seen in adulthood. The species has a broad range across Australia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. It is a large owl, and is only a little smaller than the powerful owl in Australia.
