Rufous Piculet

Sasia abnormis (Temminck, 1825)

Picidae — Woodpeckers

Rufous Piculet, Sasia abnormis, is a woodpecker of the Oriental Region, breeding in the Malay Peninsula and the Greater Sundas. It is a resident bird of tropical southeastern Asia, with a range that includes Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand. It lives in moist lowland and montane forest, especially dense secondary growth with thick understorey, vines, bamboo and decaying trees, often beside streams. Among woodpeckers it is exceptionally small, and outside the Americas it is the smallest of its kind. The male has a yellow or golden forehead patch, while the female shows bronze there and has a larger bill.
