Scaly-breasted Munia

Lonchura punctulata

The Scaly-breasted Munia, also known as Nutmeg Mannikin, is a small finch native to South and Southeast Asia. It is characterized by its scaly pattern on the breast and belly, with a brown upper body and a black head. These social birds are often found in flocks, foraging for seeds and grains in open grasslands, agricultural areas, and scrublands. They build dome-shaped nests using grass and feathers, often in colonies. The Scaly-breasted Munia is known for its melodious calls and is a popular avicultural species. Although widespread, habitat loss and trapping for the pet trade pose conservation threats to some populations.
