Scaly-sided Merganser Mergus squamatus is a duck of eastern Siberia, the Korean Peninsula and north-east China, breeding across that Palearctic range. It is a merganser linked to rivers in forested country, especially in the Russian Far East and nearby parts of China. The bird is marked by a thin red bill and a dark, scaled pattern on the flanks and rump. Both sexes carry a wispy crest, longer in adult males and shorter in females and young birds. The male has a black head and neck, white underparts and dark upperparts, while the female is greyer with a buff head.
