A 14-day expedition from Vladivostok to Khabarovsk, combining Peter the Great Gulf seabirds, Bikin River forest, Lake Udyl and Far Eastern wetlands.
About this tour
Explore the Russian Far East on a route that links the marine habitats of Peter the Great Gulf with taiga forest, major rivers and expansive wetlands. The journey starts from Vladivostok with pelagic excursions and island landings for auklets, guillemots, cormorants, gulls and migrating passerines before moving inland toward Lake Khanka.
Further north, small boats provide access to the Bikin River for Scaly-sided Merganser, Mandarin Duck and Long-billed Plover. The itinerary then continues to Lake Udyl, where the search centers on Steller’s Sea Eagle and other wetland and forest birds. Komsomolsk State Nature Reserve adds a focused attempt for Siberian Grouse and Black-billed Capercaillie.
The final stage reaches marshes near Khabarovsk for grasshopper warblers, Yellow-breasted Bunting and other eastern Palearctic specialties. This is a logistically demanding expedition involving pelagic vessels, river and lake boats, long road transfers and rail travel. Travel to Vladivostok and prepare for an early vessel departure the following morning. Exact arrival requirements are confirmed with the final tour documents.
Spend two days on pelagic trips and selected island landings in Peter the Great Gulf. Seabird colonies and migration conditions create opportunities for Spectacled Guillemot, Rhinoceros Auklet, cormorants, gulls, murrelets and passing landbirds.
Leave the coast for agricultural landscapes, taiga and Lake Khanka wetlands. Birding stops seek Pied Harrier, buntings, shrikes, Mandarin Duck, Falcated Duck and Oriental Stork.
Bird forest habitats in the morning for Asian Stubtail, orioles, flycatchers, grosbeaks and tits, then return to the lake vicinity. Evening wetland birding offers another chance for ducks, storks, falcons and reedbed warblers.
Explore the Bikin River from small boats, using quiet stretches of taiga waterway to search for Scaly-sided Merganser, Mandarin Duck and Long-billed Plover. The day is structured around early light and river conditions.
Bird near the village and marshes before a long road journey to Komsomolsk-na-Amur. This is primarily a transfer day with selected stops when timing permits.
Use several days for boat-based and shore birding around Lake Udyl. The principal focus is breeding and hunting Steller’s Sea Eagles, supported by the lake’s wetland, taiga and riverine birds.
Accommodation is simple and routes depend on water, weather and local access.
Search dense spruce forest in Komsomolsk State Nature Reserve for Siberian Grouse and Black-billed Capercaillie. Continue toward Khabarovsk using the planned rail connection.
Finish with wetland birding near Khabarovsk for Lanceolated and Pallas’s Grasshopper warblers, Yellow-breasted Bunting, Long-tailed Rosefinch and other marsh and willow-scrub birds.
Use the hotel day room until the confirmed transfer to Khabarovsk airport. The expedition ends with onward travel home.
