Scarlet Tanager

Piranga olivacea (Gmelin, JF, 1789)

Scarlet Tanager, Piranga olivacea, breeds across south-central and south-eastern Canada and the south-eastern USA, and spends the non-breeding season from Panama to Amazonia. It is a passerine in the Cardinalidae family and is found in broad deciduous woodland, especially where oaks are present, as well as in suburban plantings, parks and cemeteries. The species is notable for its pale, horn-coloured bill, which is fairly stout and smooth. Adult males are crimson with black wings and tail, while females are olive above and yellowish below.
