Sooty Grouse, Dendragapus fuliginosus, is a forest grouse of North America, breeding from south-east Alaska to southern California. It belongs to the pheasant family and is found in the edges of conifer and mixed forests in mountainous country. The bird is closely tied to conifers, and old forest is especially important to it. Regrowth after logging or fire can also suit it when shrubs are plentiful. It is a permanent resident, shifting only short distances, and in winter it moves into denser conifer cover, sometimes at higher elevations.
