Porzana carolina
The Sora (Porzana carolina) is a small, secretive marsh bird found in wetlands throughout North America. It is recognized by its distinctive black face and neck, yellow bill, and short tail. Soras are skilled at navigating through dense vegetation and are often heard more than seen, with their distinctive whinnying calls. They forage for insects, seeds, and aquatic plants in shallow water, and build their nests among cattails and other emergent vegetation. Soras are known for their remarkable migratory flights, traveling long distances between their breeding and wintering grounds. While their populations are generally stable, loss of wetland habitat poses a threat to their long-term survival.
